Groups Of Imitated Double Kick Twos Played Over 8th Note Triplets

In this lesson you will be taking the exercises covered in our imitation twos using single strokes lesson (linked below) and switching things around so that the groups of two are played over eighth note triplets. This movement will then be moved around the kit to be applied as fill patterns. A similar idea has already been applied with the straight version of the exercise, again this is linked at the bottom of the page, if you have covered this exercise already these patterns will be very straight forward. These kind of fills work well in any genre but are particularly prominent in rock and metal.

The rhythm of these fills makes the part quite tricky. Start each exercise slowly and build up tempo once you are comfortable with how they sound. In the examples below all fills are written in there full bar version. You can adjust these to half, quarter, three quarter etc... fills by replacing some of the fill with groove.

Example 1

A fill using groups of 2 and double kicks over 8th note triplets.

Example 2

A fill using groups of 2 and double kicks

Example 3

A fill using groups of 2 and double kicks.

Example 4

A fill using groups of 2 and double kicks.

Example 5

A fill using groups of 2 and double kicks.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all examples up to a tempo of around 150bpm.
  2. Experiment with shortening or extending the length of all fills.
  3. Add all fills to a structured piece.
  4. Create your own versions of these fills
