Rolls Broken By Cymbals And Double Kick

In this lesson you will be learning some double kick fills that involve using straight sixteenth note rolls around the kit that contain some blocks of cymbals within them. Under these fills you will either be playing a constand double kick part or will be using double kick under the cymbal notes. These fills will be similar to those in our Double Kick And Cymbals Fills where similar patterns were created using just cymbals and double kick.

The movements used in this lesson have been covered in our Copying The Hands With Double Kick lesson and I advise you have a look at this before proceeding with the fills.

Listed below are several ideas for fills using this concept. Various ideas and lengths have been used. Don't be afraid to start each fill slowly then build up tempo as you get comfortable with the parts. Once you are happy with a fill and can play it at a decent tempo, try applying it to some structured phrases that combine them with grooves.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all examples up to a tempo of around 150bpm.
  2. Experiment with creating further fills from this idea. A separate lesson will be given on combining this with rolls around the kit.
  3. Add all fills to a structured piece.
