In this lesson you will be applying the dragadiddle sticking to the time signature of 6/8. Links to lessons you may find useful are at the bottom of the page, it is obviously essential that you are familiar with the original sticking for this lesson to make sense!
Listed below are four versions of the rudiment, two using a standard 6/8 compound feel and two using a more syncopated feel.
Exercise 1
A Dragadiddle in 6/8 as eighth notes. Note that the drags fall on count 1 and 4 highlighting the compound time feel.
Exercise 2
A Dragadiddle in 6/8 as sixteenth notes. Again, the drag falls on counts 1 and 4 to emphasize the compound time feel.
Exercise 3
Switching back to eighth notes but with drags falling on counts 1, 3 and 5. This will feel like you are accenting quarter notes in 3/4.
Exercise 4
Then sixteenth notes, again with the simple time feel.
TASK
- Using the 2 minute rule, get exercises 5 and 6 up to a tempo of 120bpm.
- Experiment with adding feet to the rudiment.
- Experiment with orchestrating the rudiment.
