The 5 Stroke Roll is very similar to the Single Stroke 5 and sounds exactly the same. The difference is that double strokes are used in the sticking rather than singles. At this stage you will be playing the rudiment as 4 sixteenth notes followed by a quarter note, in later lessons you will be doubling this up. There will be separate lessons on applying this fill in groove and fill construction.
There are two versions of The 5 Stroke Roll, one which starts on the beat and one which ends on the beat. For both of these rhythms there are three stickings you should learn. These are listed below.
Exercise 1
A 5 Stroke Roll starting on the beat starting on the right hand.
Exercise 2
A 5 Stroke Roll starting on the beat starting on the left hand.
Exercise 3
A 5 Stroke Roll starting on the beat with alternating sticking.
Exercise 4
A 5 Stroke Roll ending on the beat starting on the right hand.
Exercise 5
A 5 Stroke Roll ending on the beat starting on the left hand.
Exercise 6
A 5 Stroke Roll ending on the beat with alternate sticking.
