Backwards Roll (Single Stroke 7)

Move around the kit backwards in this interesting single stroke 7 fill.

In this Single Stroke 7 fill you will be using the rudiment to create a sort of Backwards Roll. As with other single stroke 7 fills, the crotchet note that follows the burst of sextuplets creates a nice contrast. Remember, you can choose to fill that space with some extra notes if you wish.

This fill only uses straight notes on the floor tom, high tom and snare. First you will be given the basic fill followed by ideas for combining with groove, ideas for variation and finally an example piece.

Extending To A Full Bar

In these fills the last half of the bar will be the original fill and the first half plays something else to create a full bar fill. Three versions of this idea are listed below.

Full Bar Variation 1

Play a single stroke roll as 16th notes then sextuplets followed by the fill, all on the floor tom.

Full bar fill 3

Full Bar Variation 2

Play sextuplets as rolls around the kit. This creates the effect of moving around the kit then going back the other way.

Full bar fill 3

Full Bar Variation 3

Using flams and triplets. This version also adds an eighth note flam in the gam at the end of the bar.
