In this lesson you will be adding a run of four 16th notes over counts 2 and 3 of a 6/8 groove in the right hand. The aim here is to familiarize you with how this right hand part works to allow you to use it comfortably in your playing. This concept is pretty straight forward but it might be worth trying our Hand Stamina Exercises to help get the part a little more relaxed.

The right hand part for these grooves goes like this:

The counting for this rhythm is: 1 2+3+4 5 6

This pattern is best used on a part of the kit that has a short/sharp sound such as the ride or hi hat. If you use this rhythm on a part of the kit such as a crash or open hi hat the sixteenth note will get lost in the sustain of the cymbals.

In the following examples you will be adding kicks and snares underneath this right hand pattern.

TASKS

  • Using the 2 minute rule, get all grooves up to a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  • Create your own variations on these patterns. Write as many down as possible.
  • Use these patterns as part of a Structured Pattern. This idea works well as both a fill or groove.
