In this lesson you will be creating a groove pattern built from the Paradiddle Diddle rudiment. At full speed this is very fast so you are gonna to spend some time learning an eighth note triplet based version with a half time feel. As with the standard paradoddle groove, you will split the hands between the ride and hi hat and the back beat will be played on the snare, kicks are then placed under this. Through this page kicks will only be played as quarter notes.
In later lessons you will be creating more complex versions of this groove by adding in additional snares, accents and alternating the orchestration. For now the intention is to improve your paradiddles whilst creating a cool, useable pattern.
The Ride and Hi Hat
The cymbal part for this groove is shown below. So the right hand is placed on the ride with the left on the hi hat and the rudiment is played as normal.
Adding Snares
A snare drum is added on count 3 to give the half time back beat feel. This falls on the first stroke of the second occurance of the rudiment.
