In this lesson you will be applying the level 1 concept of opening the hi hat for an eighth note on an '+' count to grooves where a constant 16th note is used on the right hand. As a concept this is pretty straight forward as it is just combining two concepts you've already learned, but when you start adding some other level 2 concepts to the kick and snares you start to get some really interesting grooves. I have provided links to these previous lessons at the bottom of the page, if at any point you find yourself struggling with any of the parts back track and work through some of these lessons.

To apply this concept, just pick one or more '+' counts within a phrase and lift the left foot slightly up from the hi hat pedal. This will be held over the whole '+' count, so the 'a' that was originally a hi hat will be removed. This can be applied as decoration as many times are you like over as many bars as you like. All examples given below focus on one bar grooves but multiple hi hats have been opened.

Listed below are several examples of this concept. On the left you will see just the hi hat part and on the right a version with groove applied. Try constructing your own kick and snare parts under the given hi hat pattern then experiment with creating your own version of the right hand part also.
