In this 5/8 fill construction lesson you will be taking a pattern similar to the sixteenth note 332 rhythm and applying it in a linear context to create some Syncopated Fills. These patterns will also be similar to the Hand To Foot Triplets fill concept.

The basis of the pattern is going to be three sixteenth notes played on the right hand, the left hand then the right foot. You are then going to play this as many times as possible within the time signature, which will be three full times. If you do some quick sums you will realize this gives you one sixteenth note left over. For that one beat you can either add in a single strike on any voice or extend the last note of the last phrase to an eighth note.

Listed below are several ideas using this concept in various different ways. In later exercises I have moved the single note around within the bar, which breaks up the groups of three in some wierd ways. In the first example I have orchestrated a basic version of the fill on the snare and have included phrase markings to clarify the groupings.

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises upto a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  2. Play a four bar phrase in 5/8 where the fourth contains a linear 332 style fill. Repeat this phrase over.
