In this lesson you will be taking the level 0 One Beat Fill and moving it one quarter note earlier in the bar, in the same way we did when Displacing Grooves. That will give you a fill on beat 3 and that can be based on any rhythm or orchestration you wish. This is an easy way of adding something a bit different if you are getting fed up with using the same patterns over and over and you can obviously move that one beat of fill anywhere in the bar.

In a common time part, a snare will be falling on beat 4 which will fall immediately after the fill. That means some changes may need to be made around beat 4 as a result of the fill to avoid any nasty quick movements. This will be shown in the examples below. A very important element of this concept is that the groove continues after the fill. If the fill just started on beat 3 and went to the end of the bar it would just be a Half Bar Fill and they were covered back in Level 0.

Listed below are a few examples of this fill applied within a one bar pattern. Various different rhythms and orchestrations have been used but there are many more options. Use the given parts as a basis to create your own patterns.

Example 1

First of just a straight set of four 16th notes. You can see here that on beat 4 the right hand has been removed from the back beat snare to avoid having to move from a snare to a snare and hi hat within a sixteenth note.

Example 2

In this example a RLRF style movement is used in a Triangle Style Movement. The great thing about using this movement is that the kick on the 'a' count gives you space to get the right hand in with the back beat.

Example 3

Here another way of getting that right hand in with the back beat is shown. A Single Stroke 4 rhythm gives you that little bit of space needed.

Example 4

Of course the simpler option for creating some space is just using a '3e+' rhythn. This is shown here orchestrated over two drums with a pre emptive 16th note on the 'a' after beat 2.

Example 5

This concept also works really well within a double time groove, the nice thing about that feel is that there is no snare on the 4 count. An example of this is shown below using sextuplets moving around the kit.

TASK

  • Using the 2 minute rule, get all example fills up to a tempo of at least 125bpm.
  • Create your own variations of these fills.
  • Include these fills in a 4 or 8 bar pattern.
