More grooves opening the hi hat for a quarter note, this time in half time.
In this lesson you will be taking half time grooves and opening select hi hats for a quarter note. There are lessons on similar concepts you may have covered before and these will be linked at the bottom of the page. For each example you will be given an open hi hat placement followed by two example grooves following the idea. When the hi hat is opened you will lift your left foot up off the hi hat pedal, let it ring for a whole quarter note count then push your foot back down on the following numbered count. Keep an eye on the notation, in some cases the closing of the hi hat will fall at the same time as a kick or snare.
- Using the 2 minute rule, get all grooves up to a tempo of at least 140bpm.
- Create your own variations on these patterns by reorchestrating or altering rhythm.
- Use the grooves in a piece or song.
