This lessons follows on from our 16th Note 9 Stroke Roll Sticking lesson. It will be much easier to follow if you are familiar with the content from that lesson. The orchestration concept is the same as this lessons using the Five Stroke Roll and 7 Stroke Roll.

In this first 16th note 9 stroke roll orchestration concept each hand will just play a different drum. For example, in the first exercise the right hand plays the floor tom and the left hand plays the high tom. This is a great way of giving the rudiment a melodic feel which helps memorize the sticking. Playing doubles on toms is a bit tougher than on the snare so it is useful in developing your hands in this technique.

Remember, you hands will always be playing a 9 stroke roll sticking in all exercises on this page. In the later exercises the orchestration switches at various points in the bar. I have included feet in all exercises, it may be worth removing them whilst you are learning the orchestration then adding them back in later. Experiment with using different feet patterns from our previous lessons. I have also included the two different timings of the rudiment, one starting on the beat and one ending on the beat.
