The Four Stroke Ruff With Quarter Note Feet

Listed below are ideas for adding feet under the Four Stroke Ruff. The patterns used are very similar to other quarter note feet patterns applied to other rudiments so the aim of this lesson is to work on the co ordination required when using grace notes in this manner. These exercises are worth learning as they will help build co ordination between your hands and feet whilst opening up new options for part construction.

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all exercises up to a tempo of 150bpm with good hand technique.
  2. Use all three sticking patterns with each exercise.
  3. Create your own feet patterns for the exercises.
  4. Play all 6 exercises as a continuous 5 bar pattern, then repeat.
