Adding A 'C' Section To A Four Bar Phrase

These lessons expand on our previous level 1 phrased examples by taking the two or four bar phrases built up of A's and B's and adding in a C section. In this lesson I will show you two versions of this, one four bars long and one eight bars long. This lesson covers the four bar version.

In both versions of this phrase both the B and C parts are going to be fills, but you are going to approach the two different fills in different ways. The 'B' is now going to be a subtle fill which can either be just a variation on the groove or a Short Fill. The 'A' will be a groove.

Four Bar Version

The structure for the four bar version is this:

A four bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

So you are playing a bar of groove followed by a variation on that groove, another bar of groove then a fill. Below I've listed four examples of this structure with a drum part applied. I have used a combination of eighth and sixteenth note fills.

Example 1

In this example you are adding an Open Hi Hat to create the 'B' section.

A four bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

Example 2

Here you add two sixteenth note snares to create the 'B' section.

A four bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

Example 3

In this version you are using a completely different groove for the 'B' section.

A four bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

Example 4

Finally just using simple variations.

A four bar phrase made up of A B and C sections.

TASK

  1. Using the 2 minute rule, get all phrases up to a tempo of at least 120bpm.
  2. Create your own versions of these patterns based on the original phrase.
