The single stroke 4 is a short burst of single stroke rolls made up of three sixteenth note triplets and an eighth note. In this lesson you will learn the sticking for this rudiment and various variations of this. This is another fairly straight forward rudiment and can very easily be used in both grooves and fills to add some rhythmic interest.
There are two versions of the single stroke 4, one which starts on the beat and one which ends on the beat. For both of these rhythms there are three stickings you should learn. These are listed below.
Exercise 1
A Single Stroke Four starting on the beat starting on the right hand.
Exercise 2
A Single Stroke Four starting on the beat starting on the left hand.
Exercise 3
A Single Stroke Four starting on the beat with alternating sticking.
Exercise 4
A Single Stroke Four ending on the beat starting on the right hand.
Exercise 5
A Single Stroke Four ending on the beat starting on the left hand.
Exercise 6
A Single Stroke Four ending on the beat with alternate sticking.
