Half Time Level 0 Grooves With A 16th Kick On The 'a' After 1

In this lesson you will be taking some half time level 0 grooves and adding a kick on the 'a' after count 1. The aim here is to give you a new groove construction idea but also to work on the accuracy of notes placed in between hi hats, otherwise known as offbeat sixteenths. At the bottom of the page you will find a collection of links to lessons that will be useful when learning these examples, if you find you are struggling to get the kicks in accurately have a look through some of these.

Listed below are some example patterns, once you have learned these experiment with altering the parts using level 1 concepts and different snare placements.

TASK

  • Using the 2 minute rule, get all grooves up to a tempo of at least 140bpm.
  • Create your own variations on these patterns by reorchestrating or altering rhythm.
  • Use the grooves in a piece or song.
