'+' Count Splash Accents

In this lesson you will learn another simple idea for creating some variation in a groove, this time by adding splash cymbals on '+' counts. This will create a really nice musical part that is really easy to achieve. At the bottom of the page I have linked an article that discusses the splash cymbal but to just quickly recap, it is a smaller cymbal that has a short stabby sound making it perfect for accenting in this way. The splash cymbal can be positioned anywhere on the kit but above the high tom or to the left of the hi hat cymbal is the most common placement.

Listed below are several grooves with splash cymbals on various different '+' counts. There are many different variations on this idea and the parts given below are intended to be inspiration for you to create your own versions of. You will notice that quite often there is a rest in the right hand either straight before or after a splash cymbal, this is to allow you to get back to the hi hat in a more comfortable and relaxed movement.
