R L L R L L R L Exercise

The sticking pattern presented in this lesson is a modified Standard Triplet. Before starting these patterns it is highly recomended you are very comfortable with this rudiment.

When played at full speed, this exercise will be a two beat pattern made of eight sixteenth notes. That will be broken down into two lots of standard triplet sticking (R L L) followed by two single strokes (R L). So you aren't actually playing triplets here, just taking that sticking and applying it to straight semi quavers. When the right hands of this pattern are accented it creates a syncopated rhythm that can be used to create some really tasty fills.

On this page you will be shown the exercise as eighth notes and sixteenth notes as a straight version of the exercise and a version combining accents and ghost notes. The aim here is to get you comfortable with the pattern at a decent tempo. Lessons on applying this in both grooves and fills will be covered on separate pages.
