Offbeat Double 16th Note Right Hands

This lesson can be thought of as a variation on our Offbeat Eighth Note Right Hand Pattern In A Groove lesson where you only played right hands on the '+' counts. The pattern presented in this lesson will follow a similar idea but when a right hand is played it will be as two 16th notes, both played with the right hand.

This right hand style is very common across many genres but is particularly prominent in funk, disco and reggae. There are a few variations that can be made to the basic right hand part such as playing it with a swung rhythm and playing a single stroke sticking and these will be covered in a later lesson.

The right hand for this groove concept looks like this:

The right hand for this concept

All right hands will fall on the '+ a' of each beat and notice that there is no right hand on the main quarter note counts.

Listed below are several examples of this concept with groove applied. This right hand rhythm will work well orchestrated on any part of the kit, including combinations of open and closed hi hats. Placing some accents within the groove will also make some really cool patterns, I have shown some examples of this below but I will add another lesson that goes into that more later. Some examples contain some offbeat 16ths, be very careful with your note placement here as they can get quite tricky. As always, don't be afraid to slow the part right down to get your head around the timing.
