Removing The Left Hand From A Groove

In this lesson we will be discussing the idea of removing the left hand from a groove, it is a very similar concept to Removing The Right Hand. Obviously the left hand would have been playing the snare so these grooves will only contain bass drums and hi hats. This is a very simple idea and is a great way to build up a part, particularly when you are using the same pattern for a long time. I will start by listing all Level 0 Introductory Grooves but re written without the snare. Make sure you can play all of these then have a look at the practical applications that follow.

Below are just a couple of ideas of how you could use this idea practically. The ideas are very similar to the previous lesson on removing the right hand so I have kept this section brief.

Idea 1 - Use The Concept As A Fill

For this idea you will be applying the concept as the fill section in a short phrase. If find this is most effective when the fill is based around the groove used throughout, but you could change to a different kick pattern. Either way, this is not generally what you would expect to hear as a fill so can be quite affective. I have used a four bar pattern for the example below but it will work just as well for longer or shorter phrases.

Idea 2 - Reverse Idea 1

You could also switch around the structure of idea 1 so that you play without the left hand for the groove then add it back in as a fill. As mentioned above, you could either use the same pattern throughout or switch it for the fill.

Idea 3 - Build Up Your Part

This is a very common idea. You will start the pice with a groove without the snare then bring that in later on. That could look something like this:

TASK

  1. Learn all grooves and practical exampels at a tempo of at least 130bpm.
  2. Experiment with applying the idea to your playing.
